Catherine is 14! Time flies so quickly and this past year was defined by new and expanding levels of independence for her. Independence is defined as “a personal virtue marked by the ability to take control of your own life.” We’ve seen noticeable levels of individuality that align with our hopes for Catherine as she continues to mature.
She attended sleep away camp for the very first time. I think this was more of an adjustment for us as we had to let go to see her spread her wings in a wonderful way. She had to make smart choices and mature socially. This was a new and exciting way to activate development beyond home.
Chores and personal upkeep have become a way of life for her. Chores help to teach life skills and self-reliance and promotes a strong work ethic. Her older sister learned through chores at home. Catherine is no different. She helps to make her bed and put clothes and dishes away. This is also a time for her to bond with us.
Catherine found joy in learning to play the piano. Many thanks to Mrs. Eckler, who took the time to work with her and start her on this musical journey. Piano playing helps with fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. We could not believe it when we saw and heard her play Jingle Bells for the first time. We were so proud of her.
She serves as youth usher in church. This is one of the most gratifying experiences for Catherine. She takes her post each fourth Sunday to serve with her fellow ushers. She greets worshippers as they enter service and is always happy to give a hug if they need one. Ushering teaches her how to be a team player and communicate with others.
Catherine is a member of the Pep Squad at her school and absolutely loves it. Her teachers, Ms. V and Miss Madison, are wonderful coaches. She watched her sister cheer through middle and high school and is following in her footsteps. More importantly, she gets to spend time with her friends and learn new cheers.. Her confidence level has also grown in a tremendous way.
Her first year as a teenager introduced so many different and thrilling opportunities. She met each one with excitement and anticipation. Stay with us as we continue to update you on her new adventures!
Beautiful growth in Katherine.
